The Code of Hammurabi

Early Building Code Requirements

The earliest recorded building requirements (1950 B.C.) are engraved on a eight foot column in the Louvre in Paris. Inscribed is the famous Code of Hammurabi:

If a contractor builds a house for a man, this man shall give the contractor two shekels of silver per servant as recompense.

If a contractor builds a house for a man and does not build it strong enough, and the house that he builds collapses and causes the death of the house owner, then the contractor shall be put to death.

If it causes the death of the son of the owner, then the son of the contractor shall be put to death.

If it causes the death of the slave of the owner, then he shall give the owner a slave of equal value.

If it destroys property, he shall replace what has been destroyed and because he did not build the house strong enough and it collapsed, he shall rebuild the house at his own expense.

If a contractor builds a house for a man and does not build it so that it stands ordinary wear and a wall collapses, then he shall reinforce the wall at his own expense.
